In the final report from California, the students tell us about their presentation for the final ceremony of their two-week program. After that, they visited Dr. Bronner’s, a soap company from California.（カリフォルニア研修の最終回をお届けします。2週間プログラムの修了式でプレゼン発表を行い、その後カリフォルニア発の石鹸会社DR.BRONNER’Sを見学したようです。）

We had prepared for this presentation before coming abroad. We talked about the attractions of the islands in Hiroshima. We used slides and spoke to students from other universities and students from California State University. During the Q&A time, we got many questions. Some students asked, “Which is better, momiji manju or fried momiji manju?” and “Where can we ride bikes on the Shimanami Kaido?” It was not easy to answer in English, but we tried our best. We answered based on our own experiences, and we were happy to share our stories.

海外研修以前から準備を進めてきたプレゼン発表については、無事終えることができました。広島の島々の魅力について、スライドを使いながら他大学の学生や現地の大学生に向けて発表しました。最後の質問コーナーでは、想像よりも沢山の質問がきました。「もみじ饅頭と揚げもみじ饅頭はどちらがおすすめですか？」、「しまなみ海道では自転車でどこを走ることができますか？」などの質問がありました。英語で答えることに苦労しましたが、自らの体験を踏まえ回答することができたのでよかったと思います。

After the presentation, we visited Dr. Bronner’s. The company’s vision is “ALL ONE!” They think humans, animals, and plants are one family. They make eco-friendly and sustainable products. We toured the factory and learned how they make soap and about the company’s history. The employees were very friendly and energetic. They gave fist bumps to each other when they passed by. We talked with some employees, so the visit was very fun. We also met the CEO. He has a connection with Japan, and the company sells soaps with cherry blossom and green tea scents. It was a very special experience.

その後は石鹸会社DR.BRONNER’Sに向かいました。ここはALL ONE！ をビジョンに掲げ、人間も動物も植物もひとつの家族という思いから持続可能で環境に良い製品を開発しています。学生全員で工場見学をさせてもらい、石鹸が作られる過程や会社の歴史などを学びました。社員の皆はすれ違う度にグータッチをするなどとてもいきいきとしていました。社員の方とお話することができ、とても楽しい見学となりました。また、社長が日本と縁があり桜や緑茶の香りがする石鹸も売られていました。実際に社長に会って日本での経験を聞くことができたのはとても貴重な経験となりました。

On this day, we had many chances to speak and answer questions in English. I feel my listening skills have improved because I can understand questions better now. Our program will finish soon, but I want to enjoy and learn as much as possible until the end.

この1日では、質問をされて自分の経験を英語で伝える機会が沢山ありました。聞き返すことなく1回で質問を聞き取れるようになってきており、リスニング力に成長を感じました。残りわずかとなった海外研修ですが、悔いの残らないよう積極的に取り組んでいきたいと思います。
