Study Abroad (Report 3) Campus activity「海外研修Ⅰ」現地リポート③キャンパスアクティビティとサンセットマーケット観光

In the third of our reports from the study abroad program in California, students tell us about classes and campus activities, and then visiting a sunset market.（カリフォルニアでの語学研修リポート第3弾です。）
In class, we studied English for customer service and how to express emotions. Compared to Japan, we had more chances to share our opinions. I felt that explaining my ideas in English is difficult, and I realized how important it is to learn more vocabulary. During the campus activity, we did a group project where we interviewed university students. At first, I felt nervous, but with advice from local student supporters, I gradually became more comfortable speaking. I felt that my attitude toward speaking English improved.
私たちは授業やキャンパスアクティビティを行い、その後サンセットマーケットを訪れました。授業ではカスタマーサービスに関する英語や感情の表現を勉強しました。日本に比べると授業中に自分の意見を発言する機会が多く、英語による説明の難しさと英単語習得の大切さを感じました。また、キャンパスアクティビティでは大学にいる学生にインタビューするというグループ活動を行いました。現地学生サポーターからアドバイスを受けながら会話をしていくうちに抵抗感が無くなり、英会話に対する姿勢の成長を感じることができました。
After class, all the students took the train to the sunset market. It was our first time sightseeing since the program started, and we had a very meaningful time. I was especially impressed that there were many kinds of food, not only American food but also Mexican and other international food because the border is close. I heard many different languages around me, and I realized that California is truly a multicultural place.After watching the sunset from a bridge, we shared a very large beef dino rib and a lobster roll, which is a sandwich from the East Coast of America. I am still not used to talking with store staff in English when buying food. By the end of this program, I hope I can communicate more smoothly and even make small talk.
そして授業後は、学生全員で電車に乗ってサンセットマーケットに向かいました。研修が始まってから初めての観光を行い、とても有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。特に印象的だったのは、アメリカの料理だけではなく国境が近いメキシコ料理など他国のお店が沢山あったことです。行き交う人々からは様々な言語が聞こえ、カリフォルニア州という場所が本当に多文化的であることを実感しました。私たちは橋から夕日を見たあと、特大サイズの牛肉BEEF DINO RIBSやアメリカ東海岸発祥のサンドイッチであるロブスターロールをシェアして食べました。お店でのやり取りにまだ慣れでいないところがあるので、研修終わりにはスムーズなやり取りに加え、スモールトークができるようになりたいと強く思いました。
Through this first sightseeing experience, I learned that the English spoken at the university is easier to understand than the natural English spoken in tourist areas. I will continue to practice and gain more experience speaking English in many different places.
この初めての観光を通じて、大学で聞く比較的聞き取りやすい英語と観光地で聞く自然な英語には大きな違いがあることを学びました。これから先も様々な場所で英語を話す機会があるので、場数を積み重ねていきたいと思います。
