This is the first student report from another of HJU's study abroad programs  - this one in Los Angeles. Three students (two third-year Child Care Department students, and one second-year International English Department student) are taking part. As you will read, they are part of a very interesting program that includes volunteer activities in Japanese classes at a local school. ロサンゼルスに来て10日が経ち、新しい地での生活にも慣れ、小学校でのボランティアも折り返し地点にきています。

Getting used to the USA - eating burgers LA style

小学校での活動はアメリカに到着した次の日から始まりました。私たちは、幼稚園から小学6年生までの日本語プログラムのクラスに入り、活動を行っています。このクラスは、半日は日本語で、残りの半日は英語で授業が行われます。日本の学校と違って、アメリカの学校には時間割がなく、授業が流れるように行われていくことに驚きました。

I found it very strange to be in a foreign country and yet have classes conducted in Japanese. The first week was mainly for observation, and from the second week onward I I’ve had a variety of experiences, such as reading aloud, assisting with maths and actually teaching part of the class. I am also very happy that I have become closer to the children and they have started talking to me outside the classroom.（異国の地にいるのに、日本語で授業が行われていることにとても不思議な気持ちを覚えました。1週目は主に観察を行い、2週目からは、音読や算数の補助をしたり、実際に授業の一部を教えたりと様々な経験をさせていただいています。また、子ども達との距離も縮まって、クラスルームの外でも声を掛けてくれるようになりとてもうれしいです。）

日本との違いに驚く刺激的な毎日ですが、日々学び、経験しながら、楽しく成長しています。今週末のお休みはユニーバーサル・スタジオ・ハリウッドやグリフィス展望台に行く予定です。1日1日の経験を大切に、残りのプログラムを楽しみたいと思います。
