Students of the Department of International English at Hiroshima Jogakuin University have many different opportunities to gain experiences outside of campus. In this report, we hear from one such student, who has just completed her internship at a local Peace NPO, the World Friendship Center.
広島女学院大学国際英語学科の学生は、キャンパス外でも多くの経験を積む機会があります。このレポートでは、地元の平和NPO「ワールド・フレンドシップ・センター」でのインターンシップを終えたばかりの学生に感想を聞きました。

It was my honour to be an intern at the World Friendship Center (WFC) last semester. I met and learned many things, not only from textbooks but also from the stories of people from WFC and Hibakusha. Firstly, during my internship, I had the opportunity to participate in a project mapping Shizuko Abe-san's evacuation,  and I designed flyers for the Peace Day activity on August.
私は、前期にワールド・フレンドシップ・センター（WFC）でインターンとして働けたことを光栄に思っています。教科書だけではなく、WFCや被爆者の方々の話からも多くのことを学びました。まず、インターンシップ中に、阿部静子さんの被爆後の避難経路を示す地図を作成するプロジェクトに参加する機会があり、また、8月にWFCが開催する行事「平和の日」のチラシをデザインしました。

Additionally, I had the chance to meet and listen directly to the testimonies of Tamiyuki Okahara-san and Soh Horie-san, who were survivors of the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima. Through these projects, I challenged myself with new skills, such as learning how to design a digital map and flyers for a real project. The testimonies from the survivors evoked many emotions in me—anger, pain, and also motivation to research and work more in the field of peace.
さらに、私は広島の原爆の被爆者である岡原民幸さんや堀江壮さんの証言を直接聞く機会がありました。これらのプロジェクトを通じて、実際のプロジェクトで使うデジタルマップやチラシのデザインなどに初めて挑戦しました。被爆者の証言を聞いて、怒りや痛みの感情、そして平和に関する研究や活動への意欲がわいてきました。

The knowledge I gained about the history of not only Hiroshima but also Japan enhanced my understanding of Peace Studies, which I believe will be a valuable resource for the future. Although my time interning at WFC was short, the knowledge and experiences I gained will stay with me for a long time.
広島だけでなく日本全体の歴史について得た知識は、平和学に対する理解を深め、将来貴重な財産になると信じています。短いWFCでのインターンではありましたが、今回得た知識と経験はこれからも生かしていけると思っています。

Last but not least, one of the most valuable experiences from this internship was meeting and talking with many young people from various places around the world about peace and what we, as the younger generation, can do to protect peace and prevent the losses caused by war.
そしてなにより、WFCでのインターンシップは、世界各地の多くの若者たちと平和について話し合ったり、私たち若い世代が平和を守り、戦争によるさまざまな被害や損失を防ぐために何ができるかを考えたりする機会を与えてくれました。こうした機会は、このインターンシップで得た最も貴重な経験の一つです。
