旅するEnglish! Open Seminar at HJU
The Department of International English held our Open Seminar during two of the hottest days of the year. In spite of the heat, we all had a great time, studying all about the themes in our 旅するEnglish! program; thankfully our classroom had great air-conditioning.
Our program aimed to help students improve their power to think globally, as well as their English and communication skills. On the first day, after an introductory general session, the students experienced classes from Agota Duro, Kei Toda, and John Herbert. They studied about foreign cultures, focusing on their dream country; then about a journey of love through Disney princesses; and finally about the wonderful food culture in Britain. We believe they discovered lots of new things, re-discovered things they may have forgotten, and all contributed wonderfully to the various activities provided in the classes. They were vey active classes, and it was certainly a day of working on English and communication skills, and making further strides on the path to thinking globally.
In the morning of the second day, students had classes with Yumiko Isobe and Mika Osaki. They studied about cultural differences and discovered some of their own, before learning about British culture through a trip to Wonderland with Alice. After the content of the morning classes, students had time to think during their lunch break. In the afternoon, they formed groups, chose a theme, and carried out research in order to create a presentation. Later in the day, the groups presented their findings. It was great to see all the students working well in their groups - teamwork being an essential part of university life, and the workplace, too. Students had clearly learned a lot from their two days of classes, and their imaginations had been stimulated as well, because they made some very interesting findings of their own during their research.
We all enjoyed spending two days with the students on HJU campus. We thoroughly enjoyed their presentations, too. Well done for all the hard work, and we are really looking forward to seeing everyone on campus again soon!
