In the Department of International English, we like to make sure that all our first-year students are doing okay and are on-track with university life. In order to ensure this we have weekly 1-to-1 guidance sessions in the first semester. These are short, tailor-made sessions with each student. The sessions are held in our department staff's offices. It is a good chance for students to see a different environment - a kenkyuushitsu is usually a bit different from high school staff offices.

Each teacher and student has a different kind of session based on the student's needs. Some students like to work on test-taking know-how, for example connected to the TOEIC test, TOEFL test, or Eiken; others want to work on vocabulary or grammar; and others prefer to practice English conversation with a focus on fluency rather than grammar.

Each teacher provides a friendly atmosphere in their kenkyuushitsu for the weekly sessions. It is a great way for teachers to understand students' needs, not only in terms of English and academic study, but also in terms of pastoral care, too. It is a great opportunity for teachers and students to spend time together outside of the classroom, and it is worthwhile for us all.
