【Student profile】Study Abroad First-hand Experience (クラブ活動編)
Studying abroad is one of the wonderful opportunities awaiting students at HJU. YY went to the United States and this is her final article in our Department News about her experiences. Here, she tells us first-hand about the study experience in the USA.
In the beginning of the fall semester, there was an event where all the clubs and student organizations gathered. There, I looked at many clubs like journalism club, chess club, and I decided to join the fencing club and Japanese club.
I was in the fencing club for 1 semester. I joined this club because it looked interesting and I thought it was an experience that I wouldn’t get to have often. I also wanted to make new friends and it was a good chance for me to meet new people in the club. Fencing club was held for 2 hours a week, and for the first few weeks, we learned posture and rules of fencing. As we learned rules, posture and how to fence, I was able to play a game with the members. It was a fun time fencing with the club members for me.
YY explaining otsukimi at the Japanese Club
For 2 semesters I was in the Japanese club. It was held for one and a half hours a week, and the Japanese club was where people could learn Japanese culture. I and the other Japanese exchange students were there to help, such as doing a presentation when the Japanese events were near, like oshogatsu and setsubun. We also thought about how to make origami, play karuta, and do calligraphy. Joining this club was fun and I felt at home by being able to touch on my culture, but also, I was able to learn my own culture with the members in the Japanese club. Sometimes it was difficult to explain Japanese culture and made me think that I should have known more about it.
Throughout my study abroad experience, joining club activities was definitely a good opportunity for me. I was able to meet new people, make new friends, and was able to experience new things.
Many thanks to YY for "painting a picture" of her study abroad experiences in the USA over her three articles. She clearly had a wonderful time and she has made a lifetime of memories.
