In the Department of International English we also encourage our students to continue learning away from campus. There are so many opportunities out there for students to have experiences that complement their on-campus studies. AF is one student who found one such off-campus experience that will have a great impact on her life. Here she tells us about it.
（大学生にとっての学びの機会は、大学のキャンパス内はもちろん、その外にもたくさんあります。今回のウェブニュースでは、広島市内の中学校で学校支援活動に取り組んだAFさんにその様子を聞きました。）

I volunteered at a middle school from January to March. The reason why I decided to do that is because I was fascinated to be able to experience the teachers' work at an actual school. During my volunteer work, I printed handouts and kept bulletin boards up to date, but also I had opportunities to observe classes and check the students' assignments as well. Through volunteering, I could see how teachers communicate with each student which I wouldn't be able to learn just by taking the classes at the university.
（この活動に参加しようと思ったきっかけは、「大学2年生という早い段階で、実際に学校の先生の仕事を間近で観たり経験できる」ことにとても魅力を感じたからです。学校支援活動では、印刷物や掲示物の張替えに加え、実際に授業を見学させていただいたり、提出物の確認をする機会もありました。この活動を通して、先生方のそれぞれの生徒への接し方など、大学の授業だけでは学べないことを多く間近で見ることができました。）

When I participated in the English class, I'd get some questions from students such as grammar things, and also had chances to speak in front of students. Through answering the questions, I realized that "in order to teach others, I have to learn deeply" and "I will have to be able to explain in various ways." What's more, it's important to come up with topics of conversation from everyday life that can be useful for explaining, and I have to get the talking skills that can lead students to be able to concentrate on classes or study.
（英語の授業に加わったときには、文法などの質問を受ける機会があったり、生徒の前で話す機会もありました。質問を受けた時には、普段は感覚的に使っている文法でも、「人に教えるためにはもっと自分も細かいところまで勉強をしなければいけない」ことや、「同じ内容でも色々な表現方法で説明できることが必要」だということに改めて気付きました。さらに、普段の生活の中から説明の例として使える話のネタを増やしていくことや、より多くの生徒が授業に向き合えるような話し方なども身に付ける必要があると感じました。）

Above all, this volunteer activity was the first time for me to be called "sensei" in my life. I was really happy and grateful for that. This experience will surely motivate me to work hard and make more efforts to make my dream come true, even if there will be a lot of hard things along the way. I appreciate the middle school which gave me a chance to do this volunteer activity, and of course, all the teachers who gave me lots of opportunities.
（最後に、今回初めて生徒とは違う立場で学校現場に行き、実際に学校内で「先生」と呼ばれたことを心から嬉しく思いました。将来本当に「先生」と呼ばれるようになるために、今後の勉強や試験などで大変なことがあったときには今回のボランティアの経験を思い出し、頑張りたいと思います。3か月間、受け入れてくださった中学校、そして、さまざまな経験の機会を与えてくださった先生方に本当に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。）

We are delighted that AF took the initiative to do such worthwhile volunteer work at a middle school. We are also very grateful to the school for giving her such a great opportunity and, of course, to AF for telling us about it all. It seems like she had a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
